Case Study – Arklow Tower Reservoir Refurbishment

Project Details

  • Client: Irish Water
  • Main Contractor: MJS Engineering
  • Application: Repair defective concrete; resin injection; protective and waterproof coatings applied to entire structure (internally & externally).
  • Market: Civil, Utilities

Larsen Contracts has successfully completed the rehabilitation of the main water tower reservoir located in the town of Arklow, Co. Wicklow. The project included both internal and external refurbishment of the tower reservoir as well as the internal refurbishment of the secondary underground reservoir in accordance with The Confined Space Regulations.

The aim of the refurbishment works was to tend to general structural damage (including joint repair, cracks and visible leaks) and to extend the life of the reservoirs – in order to achieve this, special care was taken in identifying defective areas of the structure; which were then mechanically removed, treated and repaired. Once the construction joints were restored and resin was injected, the application of a cementitious fairing coat was applied to all surfaces of the tank, followed by two layers of a DWI approved waterproof coating, which was applied internally. Finally, two layers of anti-carbonation paint were applied to the external surfaces.
